Staining is 80% preparation. Grey, fuzzy wood fibers, mill glaze on new lumber and old failing film-forming finishes all have to come off before anything new goes on, or the stain sits on top and peels within a season. We wash at the correct low pressure for wood, neutralize and brighten the fibers, then let the boards dry to the right moisture content before a brush or roller touches them.

We favor penetrating oil-based stains because they soak into the grain rather than forming a skin. On Missouri decks that see 100-degree July sun and January freeze-thaw, a penetrating oil wears evenly and recoats cleanly instead of flaking. We help you choose a tone — from a clear-toned natural to a deep walnut — and stain rails, spindles, stringers and fence pickets, not just the easy flat surfaces.
